Wakefield

A West Yorkshire cathedral city, on the Pennines eastern edge and the River Calder, which at the 2011 census had a 99,251 population, is Wakefield, England. Exploiting its navigable River Calder position to become a port that is inland, Wakefield became an important market town and centre for wool. Rebuilt in about 1100 in stone and was continually enlarged until 1315 when the central tower collapsed, was the Wakefield Saxon church.

Amused themselves in sports and games earning the "Merrie Wakefield" title are the townsfolk of Wakefield, archery was the chief sport in the 14th century and at the Ings, near the river, were the Wakefield butts. When Kirkgate station in 1840 was built on the Railway of Manchester and Leeds, the railways arrived in Wakefield.

Anciently a market and parish town in the Agbrigg division of the wapentake of Agbrigg and Morley in the West Riding of Yorkshire was Wakefield. The former villages that were outlying of Thornes, Alverthorpe, Agbrigg, Sandal Magna, Flanshaw, Kettlethorpe, and Lupset are in Wakefield. A member of the Leeds City Region Partnership, a sub-regional economic expansion partnership covering an area of the historic county of Yorkshire is Wakefield.

Operated by Northern who operate trains to Meadowhall Interchange, Barnsley, Normanton, Sheffield, Knottingley, Pontefract, Nottingham, Castleford, and Leeds, and unstaffed is Wakefield Kirkgate. Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, a boys-only school established in 1591 by Queen Elizabeth I by Royal Charter is Wakefield's oldest surviving school.

Administered by the Wakefield Charities Governors who, in 1878, opened Wentworth Street's Wakefield Girls High School WGHS was the school. Announced plans to establish a University Centre of Wakefield were Wakefield City Council and Wakefield College in 2007, but a bid for funding failed in 2009. Also has the Wakefield Squash Club, Wakefield Bowls Club, and Yorkshire Regional Hockey Academy, on the same location, is Wakefield Sports Club at College Grove.

In the constituency of Hemsworth, represented since 1996 by Jon Trickett of the Labour party, is the South ward of Wakefield covering Kettlethorpe, Sandal, Belle Vue and Agbrigg. Include the refurbishment of the Navigation Warehouse and office, retail, restaurant and cafe units were the expansions by the river and canal, The "Wakefield Waterfront".
